You Built That? Maybe, But You Didn't Do That On Your Own...

Isn't it cute how the Republicans took a quote by President Obama out of context and made it a constant theme at their convention and ads?

It's even funnier when they drag people who say "I (We) Built That!" only to find out that not only did they NOT build that on their own but are dependent on the government for contracts to keep their business going.

But here we are at the Republican National Convention listening to the standard bearers of the Republican party talk about how they did it themselves with no help at the same time they mention how they and their family USE government programs like Social Security and Medicare to help them get along.

But it goes beyond that. Social Security and Medicare are programs most people support but the standard bearers of the convention even got handouts from the government that they didn't even need and took credit like they did it themselves. Here are four examples done up in "Inspirational Poster"

Dumb Meme If You Don't Want To Reveal What You Really Are.

So why is THIS a dumb meme? Basically, If you are spreading it around, You basically revealing you're a racist.

How? Well, Some white people have had a hard time dealing with the fact that Trayvon Martin got a lot of publicity on his death. For once the Mainstream Media Focused on a killing of someone who wasn't a young blonde female.

To recap: Trayvon Martin was an unarmed 17-year-old teenager  walking in the The Retreat at Twin Lakes gated community on the night of February 27th 2012. He was pursued by George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old man with a criminal record who ironically who participates in a neighborhood watch where Martin was temporarily staying.

Zimmerman noticed Martin walking inside the community. Zimmerman called the police to report Martin's behavior as suspicious While still on the phone with the police dispatcher, Zimmerman left his vehicle and there was a fight, which ended with Zimmerman fatally shooting Martin once in the chest at close range.

For weeks, Not much was heard about the incident. Zimmerman was NOT arrested, nor was he charged. Trayvon's father hired a lawyer to investigate and to look into 9-11 calls. It turns out that Zimmerman's account was not consistent with the 9-11 calls and attention was FINALLY given to the case and it spread throughout the social media before the MSM took it on. Upon hearing about the news most people reacted with outrage over the fact a young unarmed black kid was shot by man with a criminal record who stalked him out on a rainy evening. And because like with Henry Louis Gates,  Being black means that reporters will ask our president about the incident. Because, In case you haven't noticed President Obama is....black.

So President Obama being a man who doesn't dodge any question answered with the "If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon." statement. A showing of empathy that is normal in a situation like that. Lord knows I can relate to the idea of being a teenager being pursued by an overzealous adult. It scares the crap out of me. Stranger Danger, man!

But some people had a problem with that. They had a problem with bogie men Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson asking for justice for Trayvon Martin and the arrest of a man who stalked and shot an unarmed juvenile. therefore they had to invent stories about Trayvon that somehow justify Zimmerman's shooting of him.

"He was in trouble with school"
"He was wearing a gangsta hoodie"
"He attacked Zimmerman first"
"He was on drugs"
"He was taller and older than the pictures in the paper"

Anything to invalidate his life. These people can't fathom the idea that a young black kid can be the VICTIM of an unjustified shooting by someone who wasn't black.

Hence the meme. It points out how a white woman got killed and the perps were three black men. And that it wasn't front page news. Actually it was, right in the days after the killing. That WASN'T the case with Trayvon Martin. Shades of Ann Coulter with her erroneous attack on the New York Times for not publishing Dale Earnhart's death on the front page. Also two of the perps were arrested immediately and the third one was captured after an intense manhunt.

In other words, The police did their job. They didn't bother asking whether Jacqueline Gardner attacked them first. The police didn't let them out without bail. They're in jail complete with mugshots. A horrible crime to be sure but I hardly think the people spreading the meme would be feeling the same way if the woman was black and the men were white. Just look at the comment section where this picture originated.

Everyone needs to spread the word about this guy he shouldn't be able to ever get any female. This is just maddening and sooo sad. Indiana is a concealed and carry state. These foul beasts are traveling outside their ghettos more and more, nowhere is safe. It doesn't matter what you do to keep them out (high property values, expensive rentals, reduced public transit) they can still find a way. And they wonder why we racially profile whe they are in out areas.

An Appreciation of John Callahan

John Callahan died the other day.


Who was John Callahan?



He was a cartoonist who was published in various alternative weeklies starting in the 80s. He had a dark sense of humor with his work. He poked fun at anything he could with the most acidic sense of humor. His cartoons could be tasteless, insensitive, blasphemous, sexist and borderline racist but almost always funny.


















He had a rough style of rendering brought about by the fact he was a near quadriplegic due to a drunk driving car accident he was in when he was 21. He wasn't driving but he drank so much He didn't know the severity of his injuries. After a few lost years, He went back to his cartoonist interests and developed his style using his hands clasped together and took the alternative comic scene of the early 90s by storm.


He wrote an autobiography complete with pictures called "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot: The Autobiography of a Dangerous Man" is a fantastically funny read. He was able to laugh at himself about his handicapped situation, His upbringing and his outlook on life.














Of course when he made fun of the handicapped, He outraged many people. But he was an equal opportunity offender. He outraged anybody and everybody which for me as a free speech liberal was refreshing. No cows were sacred.

Even snowmen.




















I wish I hadn't lost touch with his recent work and I have seen that he had not lost his edge when I checked it out when he died.

I Know The Story Is Old...

But it bugs me how the defenders of that racist cartoon were telling those of us who were offended that the intended joke was obvious. Well, if it was so obvious why did could they not make up their mind whether the monkey was Nancy Pelosi or that the stimulus bill was written by the monkey.

Well, let me give a punchline for the cartoon that would make it clear what the intended message was...

At the risk of being tagged a homophobe, I created this card because according to Wikipedia, the Yule Log has an alternate term in Europe.

No More Mullet!

It was 1995 and I had settled with my Girlfriend At The Time (GATT), Sonya in Federal Way, WA, a suburb of Seattle. I had taken my first full time job since I moved to Seattle at a warehouse in Kent, WA. I hated the job but I liked the people I worked with, my supervisor was cool but I wasn't losing weight. So I was a bit depressed. I grew a beard and took on a red neck persona.




















Then I got a call out of the blue from Humongous Entertainment, A computer gaming company for kids based in Woodenville, Washington.

I had an interview with them in May of 1994 which went well, but my inexperience with computers probably cost me an opportunity to work as an animator.

So now it was February 1995, I had worked at a warehouse for less than 6 months so the idea of working at Humongous Entertainment looked like a golden opportunity to move on up in the world and maybe move with or without Sonya to a better town.

Oh, it was good news.

At the same time my friend Sean called me with the opportunity to do caricatures for Guinness for bar clients in the Seattle area.




















Kaloo, Kallay! Two jobs involving my skills at art that will get me out of the low wage jobs I had done since my move to Seattle. I was ecstatic, surely they would not call out of the blue to not offer me the job.


















I was wrong. I got the call from Humongous stating I didn't get the job. I was devastated. I really wanted the job and if I had gotten it, my life would be so different, opportunities would have banged my door down. Instead I continued to toil in the warehouse, bitter and embarrassed by my excitement at telling my co-workers I was going to leave that miserable job.



















Still, I had some compensation. I did get the gig with Guinness. I had an all expense orientation trip to Connecticut in which I showed my appreciation by getting drunk on beer that wasn't Guinness. My need to NOT kiss ass almost cost me the job. The job was good paying but it was a part time gig, so it was just extra money. Money enough to take a vacation finally with my GATT.





















To this day it is the best vacation I took with anyone I have ever dated. We took a drive down the west coast, with stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Mexico. It was beautiful and a lot of fun. Boogie boarding at many of the places listed in the Beach Boys "Surfin' USA", visiting Richard Nixon's grave, and other fun activities.










I was amazed that I had time to work on Pipe Dreams. This set of strips I felt was the best constructed of the strips I had submitted at that point. I made one significant cosmetic strange in the look of the strip. I had gotten rid of Dirk's mullet. I don't know why I had it in the first place. Maybe the late 80's was a fine time to have a character with a mullet but by 1995, a mullet was way out of style, an object of ridicule. dirk was too well liked by those who read Pipe Dreams to accept a cheap shot so I cut the mullet.





















These set of strips feature more of Julian and his rebel ways. I liked the character but I feel that in some ways , he was too radical to be accepted in the mainstream comic strip pages. Still I go for the joke.





















Pipe Dreams was starting to have the proper balance of good art and some increasingly good writing and dialogue. Some of the strips in this group I am particularly proud. By this time I had enough of a back catalog that if one of the syndicates were to come a calling, I would whip out my sketchbooks and previous submissions to prove I had what it takes to produce a daily comic strip.







































Just give Pipe Dreams a chance.


Anyway, some new comic strips were being published by this time. Ones that were conceived around the time I conceived Pipe Dreams. Some were great like Mutts but others like Mallard Fillmore which is the biggest waste of space any newspaper could possibly give. Some of the others were niche and not very good. Still, I was starting to feel that Pipe Dreams would never be syndicated because I wasn't either bland, right wing or great. I felt Pipe Dreams was better than most of the new strips that were syndicated after 1992. Some went by the wayside but others are still published to this day.


















I still had hope...but I was feeling trapped living in Federal Way unable to develop a career that would enable us to move up and start a family.

This was a piece I based on a photograph. It was getting me nowhere until I thought about doing an ad for jewelry. I like it, how bout you?

Sorry About The Sameness

So, I've been trying to get Pipe Dreams syndicated for a long time, even before I got a computer. I had hand drawn my strips for years and had only used the computer to touch up the artwork and print up the pages.

The closest to copying panels came about by using the same sketch to draw repetitive drawings. I would hand draw each panel based on the sketch to give it a "real" feel. Recently I have been using Flash to "ink" my artwork based on hand drawn sketches.

A friend of mine suggested I have a library of spot drawings to paste on my strips for quickness.

I have resisted because I DO think it's cheating, however, with this blog I have wanted to do more topical strips and found that the guys sitting on a couch watching TV is a good template to use in response to current events as close to when they happened. It was a "eureka" moment, so I have been testing it, in reference to the awful events of Monday. I may use it in the future if I have a good Commentary but I don't have the time to whip up original drawings. Anyway, here's a third comic strip based on what people are talking about in the aftermath. In two weeks expect to be bludgeoned by the Dirk point of view of the cartoon when Mallard Fillmore does his take on the events of VA Tech University.

Yeah It Sucks

Imus, Duke Lacrosse and Black Elmer Fudd

So Don Imus lost all his jobs related to his Imus In The Morning gig. If it was under different circumstance, I would applaud this decision. They can fire him for whatever reason they see fit. Imus is a tired old fart whose humor is decades out of date. I listen to WFAN for sports, well, baseball and since I don't have Sirius and live in a terrible radio market, I like listening to sportsradio. Imus don't talk sports so I'm glad he'll be replaced with a sports guy, or at least a good talker.

However, Getting fired for saying words that offended some people is a ridiculous reason to fire someone who is a "shockjock". Now, Imus is a guy who insults pretty much everyone even if they don't deserve it, especially if they don't deserve it. Obviously the Rutgers Womens Basketball Team didn't deserve to be called "Nappy Hos" It WAS racist because it came in reference to the teams looks in comparison to the team that won the Finals.

Now, first of all, whatever happened to "Stick and Stones"? I mean, yeah it's offensive but they are just words, words that were repeated ad nauseum by pretty much every news reader out there. So if the words were that horrible, why would they be able to repeat it?

It's a tired old man trying to shock, using a 30's term for hair and an 80's bastardizing of the word whore. Bad Joke, Bad Joke. But the way you hear Al Sharpton talk it's like they brought Holocaust Slavery to the black race.

It's just words, one used constantly in hip hop, and the other in one of my favorite Stevie Wonder song "I Wish". I'm supposed to respect the courage of the team and the obstacles they had to overcome if they are blown away by an old fart saying dumb words? And when it's all said and done it was more misogynist than racist. It was mocking their looks and their femininity. To be fair the team didn't seem to mind at first until they got bombarded with phone calls asking for their reaction. I mean, they were hoping to hear from people with their triumph in being in the Basketball Finals or at least sympathy that they lost and missed the opportunity to be only the second team in all of sports to win a championship for the school of Rutgers. It gpot out of hand and take it from me, I've heard worse on your average right wing talk show.

And speaking of Ring Wing Whining Talk Show Hosts, Their recent Cause Celebre has been the Duke Lacrosse team. They were accused of rape in a party that got out of hand. Right from the start the Right Wing News took the team's side. I found it interesting they were quick to NOT judge this time. But I can't fault them, they were right, the kids lives were disrupted immensely by what would be false accusations. Still, these kids were boozing it up illegally, hiring strippers for their party and basically rabble rousing in a way that normally would be unacceptable to these right wing talk show hosts.

Anyway, I'm glad Imus is off the air, maybe something better will replace him, hopefully not Al Sharpton, even though I thought his speech was brilliant at the 2004 Democratic Convention.

So, in the spirit of freedom of speech I'm gonna link to various controversial things I found on the web that I think are funny but cringe worthy.

The first video is an old Bugs Bunny cartoon. As you can see by the frame grab,it's a bit racist featuring a hunter like Elmer Fudd but as a poor, lazy black man. It was typical of the stereotypes of blacks in those days, but the cartoon is pretty funny with a sight gag so brilliant it was used in a promo for TBS's presentation of the Bugs Bunny Show minus the indicator of the race of the hunter. Feel shame as you laugh at this. I saw this years ago on a bootleg tape.


The next one is a Warner Brothers cartoon I had always wanted to see, It's directed by the brilliant Bob Clampett. It's called Coal Black and The Sebben Dwarfs. It's racist, but more in the caricature vein. It's jazzy, makes good use of topical humor in regards to WWII, and So White is hot! It is considered a classic and thanks to Youtube, you can judge for yourself.

The next one is a Lenny Bruce routine made into a cartoon take of the Lone Ranger. It's typical Lenny Bruce wordplay, with some racial, homophobic overtones.

And here's a short that takes episodes of Seinfeld and mixes it with the Michael Richards career killing racist rant with hilarious results. The piece reminds us of how the normally white bread show, had some colorful moments.

Why Even Call It B.C.?

Johnny Hart died today. On Easter no less. Ironic considering that Hart was a born again who always reserved his Easter strips with the Good News of the resurrection of Jesus. I don't think Johnny Hart will rise again.

Anyway, once upon a time, B.C. was the funniest strip in the paper. No lie. The stuff published in the 60's was groundbreaking in its graphic simplicity and funny as heck. Like many strips that are around for twenty plus years it started to get stale, then a funny thing happened. Johnny Hart became born again. He started preaching the word in his strip. This made for an intriguing anachronism. A strip called B.C. in other words BEFORE Christ.

Anyway the preaching could get out of hand sometimes, particularly when he would be borderline Anti-Semantic. This one published the day he died involves a numerology twist. He likes to twist things around to prove a point about something but I dunno what it is, I always thought it was intriguing that I turned 33 in 2000. It means nothing.
